Compulsory School - Grades 1-9
Sweden requires nine years of compulsory education from ages 7-16. There is also a pre-school class, similar to kindergarten for six year olds which is usually located in the elementary school building. Note that in Sweden children start school at a later age than other countries. They normally start first grade at the age of seven.
Compulsory school is divided into three levels: lågstadiet (grades 1- 3), mellanstadiet (grades 4-6) and högstadiet (grades 7-9).
The schools are required to follow a national curriculum and a national syllabus for each subject. For more information on the Swedish education system check

Additional School Services and Activities
Swedish as a Second Language
Students in compulsory school who do not have Swedish as a first language will be given instruction in Swedish as a Second Language (SSL). Special teachers assist the students in their transition into Swedish school by working with the students individually and in small groups.
First Language Instruction (Hemspråkundervisning)
Students who do not have Swedish as a first language have a possibility to receive first language instruction in compulsory school. It is not mandatory, but the municipality is required to provide first language instruction if a suitable teacher can be found and if the number of students in the language group is more than five. More information can be found at www.skolverket.se (in English)
Leisure-Time Centre (Fritidshem)
The Leisure time centre provides child care for children 6-12 years old before and after school and on school holidays when parents have to work. The centres are set up at the schools and the staff works with the teachers and other school personnel. The goal of the programs is to promote the all-round development of the children. There is a sliding scale fee based on the parental income.
