This picturesque town, located in western Mecklenburg on the border to Schleswig-Holstein, is one of the oldest towns in the county of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Gadebusch has an area of 218 km² and there are 11 400 citizens in the city, which is a population density of 52 persons per square kilometer.
 
Gadebusch was granted a town charter in 1225. The town hall was built at 1340 and is a distinctive feature for Gadebusch. It is located at the market place and is a characteristic brick building from that century.
 
The town is surrounded by untouched nature with forests and meadows.

Åmål and Gadebusch became twin towns in 2000.
