De Pere Wisconsin, USA
On 8 November 2007, Åmål signed a Sister City Agreement with De Pere, Wisconsin. Located 330 km north of Chicago, Illinois, De Pere has a population of around 22 000.
De Pere was established as a mission by French Jesuit priests in 1671. Its name comes from “Les Rapides des Pères” (the rapids of the fathers), which refers to the location of the settlement on the rapids of the Fox River.
Today, the Fox River continues to be the major geographical highlight of De Pere. Fishing, boating and ice fishing are popular pastimes just as they are in Åmål.
A new bridge across the river was opened at the time Åmål and De Pere became sister cities, symbolizing our new relationship. The goal of the sister city exchange is to promote international goodwill and understanding. This will be accomplished through the exchange of information and ideas in different areas, for example, business, culture, environmental work, tourism and schools.
